The Legacy Trail Extension

Just the Facts

  • Community conservation goal to complete The Legacy Trail Extension so that the trail extends from downtown Sarasota to North Port
  • A  Sarasota countywide referendum was on the ballot on November 6, 2018, and passed
  • This Referendum gives Sarasota County the approval to borrow money in the form of bonds to complete the project
  • The bonds will be paid back with ad Valorem taxes restricted to these purposes

Why It Matters

The Legacy Trail Extension will complete the conversion of an unused, overgrown rail corridor to a well-used recreational and commuting trail spanning nearly 30 miles. The trail provides an attractive and safe place to walk, run, skate or cycle, explore local nature, commute to jobs, or run errands.  The trail enhances quality of life and improves property values.

Trail usage in 2017 totaled 225,573, and in 2018,  usage had already reached 118,642 in the first five months.
