Sitting on the porch of Rob Patten’s and Babette Bach’s rustic cabin along the Myakka River, you can’t help but feel that you have been transported back in time.

Cabbage palms twist and arch their way skyward as they stretch for light through a forest canopy created by centuries-old live oaks.

For Mickey Davis, those came together when friends who knew her passion for the outdoors, encouraged her to become involved with Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, whose mission is to preserve forever the unique beauty of the land that has drawn people here for hundreds of years.

Dr. Krista Toomre & Dr. Harold Johnson

“I grew up sailing, fishing and enjoying everything outdoors with my parents,” recalls Johnson. “It was the perfect childhood, but it also gave me a unique perspective as to the ways in which we impact the environment around us. I learned that even little things can make a big difference.”
